Velvet Goldmine

1-7-2025

I was wanting to watch a movie that I had never heard of before, so I went to a site that showed me a grid of 12 random movies. I refreshed it until something interesting popped up. I saw this poster with this androgynous person in a multi-colored shirt called Velvet Goldmine. I saw the 1998 release date and thought “this is either going to have aged really badly or be a very heartfelt movie”, and thankfully it was the latter.

I’m not really going to do plot summaries for these any more cause those aren’t fun. I’ve done it a couple times for my other journals. I’m just going to express what I liked and disliked.

I loved the depiction of gay/bisexual men alongside the drag used in glam rock. It was a love letter to everyone who went against the norms at the time. There was a scene that really tore me up. It was when Christian Bale as Arthur Stuart was in his room looking at pictures of Brian Slade (a David Bowie Analog) and masturbating. His father bursts in the room and calls him disgusting and a disgrace. This really got to me and it did make me a little emotional and I had to pause the movie for a few minutes. I also know what Ewan McGregor’s penis looks like now.

I totally recommend this movie. Give it a watch.
