Sonic 3

12-24-24

On December 23rd, my girlfriend Foxy went to go watch Sonic 3 with a group of her friends. It said it would peak within 10 minutes of watching it, so I planned to see it. Then on the 24th, my friend Harlow went to see it. I watched half of Sonic 2 because I was putting it off, but I couldn’t even bring myself to finish it. So, I got ready and went to go see the movie. There weren’t that many people there since it was Christmas Eve. I saw some teasers, and the one I was most excited for was the teaser trailer for Superman. The James Gunn DC stuff has really raised my hopes for that movie.

The opening combat scene was fucking awesome, and all the scenes with Shadow were definitely the highlight of the movie. I knew Maria was going to get G.U.N.ned down like a dog(a phrase I keep saying to my girlfriend), but somehow the movie still made the scenes resonate with me. The cheesy line about “even a star that is gone still shines”(paraphrased because I can’t quite remember) really made me almost cry in the theater. I’m still not a massive fan of Sonic’s voice in these movies, but Knuckles and Tails are fine. I really liked everything going on with Eggman and Gerald. Jim Carrey is excellent at playing off himself. There were some groan worthy jokes, but I can’t even pick them out anymore. When Live and Learn started playing, I really forgot every part I didn’t enjoy in the movie and my malleable stupid Sonic-fan brain took over. I wanted to cheer, but had the restraint to not bother anyone else in the theater. Another standout joke was when Gerald got zapped by the chaos energy at the end of the film. Instead of a big explosion, he sorta just poofs out of existence with a bug zapper noise. Eggman’s death actually made me feel sad. I guess I’d feel the same or worse if I saw the video game version die in a fiery explosion.

I really liked a lot of the references they threw in. The Biolizard in the flashbacks with Maria were a nice way of referencing it without bogging down the movie with this random monster they’d have to explain away. The Chao Garden was also a fun way to include characters that wouldn’t fit into this universe. I hope they are able to incorporate more of the game stuff. I am a little bummed they didn’t go full Space Colony Ark with the eclipse cannon, but I understand that would have been way too much for the movie to get into. They probably won’t get into the Black Doom stuff. That is just too convoluted for what the movie's universe has going on, and if they were going to do it, it would have been this movie. Even as a throwaway line.

I would definitely say this movie was a big step up from the first two movies, and I would totally go see Sonic 4 whenever it comes out. I spent the drive home talking to my girlfriend, excitedly talking about the motorcycle chase scene and the Live and Learn scene. Apparently there was a post credit scene but I left before I saw them in theaters. Harlow told me about them, so I watched them. I guess Metal Sonic(s?) and Amy will be in the next movie or series. We’ll all just have to see about that. The next thing better be awesome.
